Steve and Cheri Smith pastored in Flora, Illinois for 6 years when in 2002, they felt their call to go on the AIM program to Guyana, South America. While on AIM, they re-opened the Bible school and Brother Smith was appointed as the president of the school. In the first year they had 25 graduates with a one year degree. Brother Smith was also appointed as the national secretary/treasurer of the work during that time. After being appointed as missionaries in 2002, they went back to Guyana and in 2002-2003; they continued the Bible school work and pastored a church in Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown. In 2004, Brother Smith was appointed as the superintendent of the UPC of Guyana. After deputation, they returned to Guyana and continued working in the Bible school along with pastoring. The Smiths also assumed the pastorate of the headquarters church in the capital city of Georgetown, seeing the church grow from around 40 to a peak attendance of 240. Sister Smith was elected as the Sunday school director for the work and continues to serve in that office. When they return to the field, they will continue pastoring the headquarters church, operating the Bible school, strengthening the Sunday School Department, training leaders and promoting growth throughout the country. |
